What is the difference between a Managed Server and a Root Server?

A Managed Server is managed by 1&1; a Root Server is managed by you.

A 1&1 Managed Server offers the same features as a shared hosting package, the only difference is that a Managed Server package has its own exclusive server. 1&1 oversees security updates, system maintenance, initial configuration/ installation, and hardware replacement. There are no limits on memory usage, number of running processes or CPU usage, and you can set up your own local MySQL database (external access to this database is only possible with a Root Server).

You will not have any root access to a 1&1 Managed Server. Therefore, you will not be able to install other applications of your choice or have access to error logs and system configuration files.

A Root Server is a pre-configured server granting you "root" access. "Root" is the user on a Linux system with access permissions who can change the entire system at his or her own discretion. Root Servers come pre-installed with Fedora Core 4 Linux and Plesk 8 control panel software. Root Servers are recommended for technically proficient people who are seeking the advantages of space, power and total control. Users can install applications, perform configuration, run game servers, etc.

1&1 does not undertake any administrative tasks on root servers, only physical maintenance and repair. The user is responsible for any administrative tasks such as security, backup and configuration.
