What can I do with the recovery tool?

What is the recovery tool?

The 1&1 recovery tool enables you to choose from your config menu, under
'Server administration' -> 'Recovery-Tool', how the server should start after the next reboot. You can also have a genuine hardware reset carried out automatically.

What boot possibilities are available?

The form gives you the choice between two boot modes:

1) Normal system

Your system boots from the internal hard disc.

2) Rescue system

Your system boots from a rescue system that has been set up just for you without addressing the internal hard disc. You can access this system via your IP with the password created while going through the process of booting the server into rescue.
The hardware reset is carried out by choosing the corresponding button.

Important information
Please only use the hardware reset when you are unable to reboot your system any other way. The hardware reset may cause you to lose data, e.g. when accessing data on the hard disc, so always reboot from the command line if at all possible. If you can reboot the server from plesk or ssh then do not check the reboot now option. Change the boot mode and then reboot from command line.

My rescue system won't reboot.

You may find that the reset command will not work in rescue mode. When you have repaired your system in rescue mode, switch over to Normal system in the config menu. You can then give the command to reboot in the command line, and your system should boot normally.

How do I boot my server from the command line?

When you have logged on via SSH, reboot your server with the shutdown -r now command.

How do I mount the internal hard disc?

Using the
mount /dev/md1 /mnt/
and
umount /dev/md1
commands assuming software raid. For more detailed explanation see How to restore the server using the rescue system

I would like to re-initialize my server.

You can re-initialize or reimage the machine from inside the 1&1 Control Panel in the 'Server Re-image' section. If this is not possible please notify Support. After receipt of written identification, we can put your server in a delivery state (all data will be deleted!).
