How to use 1&1 Mail Servers without pointing to 1&1 DNS

You can use 1&1 Mail Servers without pointing to 1&1 DNS as follows:

EXTERNAL DOMAIN
a. Add your domain in the Control Panel as an External Domain. Follow the FAQ:
How do I point to 1&1 name servers?
(Note: Choose 1&1 Mail Server Settings. And Please ignore the last step
where you are told to change the DNS at your current Registrar's end)

You will have to wait for about 12 hours before you make the next changes in the
Control Panel. Meanwhile do a WHOIS on your domain and make a note of the DNS of
your domain. Go to http://www.internic.net/whois.html
Type in your domain name and click Submit. The name servers are displayed.

b. Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel at: https://admin.1and1.com

If you have only one package, you will land on the Administration page.
If you have more than one package, select the relevant package to reach
its Administration page.

c. Select Domains from the Basic Settings section.
Domains
Choose the domain that you added as an external domain. Click the
arrow next to DNS and select Edit DNS Settings.

d. Under Basic DNS Settings choose My name server. And under
Advanced DNS Settings enter the name server information you got from WHOIS.
Click Save.

e. Now contact your registrar and change the MX records of your domain to
mx00.1and1.com and mx01.1and1.com The propagation will take about 24 hours.

f. Under e-mail you can now setup your e-mail addresses.

Note: If you have more than 4 DNS, then the above mentioned procedure will not
work. You have to first reset your domain to have 4 or less than 4 DNS and then
follow the instructions.

DOMAIN REGISTERED WITH 1&1
a. You can follow the instructions listed in FAQ: How do I modify the DNS of a domain?
and point the DNS to another host.

b. MX records should be set to mx00.1and1.com and mx01.1and1.com at the other
hosts end.
