How do I add an external domain that uses my own name servers (DNS)?

This article explains a work around for using the 1&1 services with a domain that is not registered with 1&1 and not using 1&1's name servers (DNS). If you want to use the 1&1 name servers (DNS transfer) for your domain, please reference How do I point a domain to 1&1 name servers? instead.

You will not able to create any e-mail addresses or use web hosting for a domain until that domain has been added to the 1&1 Control Panel. To add a domain to the 1&1 Control Panel, you would normally have to transfer the domain to 1&1 completely or point to 1&1's name servers (DNS). There is a work around explained below for those who have a domain registered at another company and do not want to use the 1&1 name servers but want to use 1&1 to manage their e-mail accounts or web hosting.

To add the domain to the 1&1 Control Panel so that you can start using 1&1's services:
Step 1:

Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel using your Customer ID OR domain name and your password.

If you have only one package, you will land on the Administration page. If you have more than one package, select the package in question to reach its Administration page.

Step 2:

Click the Domains link from the Domains & Webspace panel.

Step 3:

Click the New button above the list of domains.

Step 4:

Enter the domain name that you wish to use with the 1&1 services but uses non-1&1 name servers.

Step 5:

Select Point your domain to 1&1 name servers and keep your current Registrar. You are selecting to perform a DNS transfer simply so that the domain will be added to the 1&1 Control Panel. You will not actually make any change in name servers to your domain however.

Step 6:

1&1 will attempt to detect your domain's current mail servers. Make sure to select Use the 1&1 mail servers.

Click the Next button to proceed.

Step 7:

An overview page will be shown with the 1&1 name servers to use. Disregard the name servers listed as you will not be using the 1&1 name servers

Simply click the Order button to complete the process and add the domain to the 1&1 Control Panel. Please note that there is no charge for the DNS transfer process.

Step 8:

You should receive a notice if the process was successful. Click the Go To Overview button to continue.

Step 9:

The domain overview should show the domain added and listed as an external type of domain.
The Status will read DNS settings incomplete with registrar because the domain is not using the 1&1 name servers. We will need to make another change to get rid of this status message. Proceed to the next step.

Step 10:

You must know the current DNS addresses for the domain for the next steps. To double-check the addresses, check the WHOIS information for your domain at http://who.is/ by typing your domain name into the search bar on the website and clicking the Search button.

Search for the Name Servers section and write down all the name servers listed.

Step 11:

Check the box next to the domain to select it and then click the DNS button above the list of domains.

Step 14:

Enter all the name servers used for the domain in the text boxes in the Advanced DNS Settings section.

When all have been entered, click the OK button to save your changes.

Step 15:

A notice that your changes are being applied is shown.

Step 16:

Last Step (IMPORTANT): You will now need to update your DNS settings with your DNS host so that this domain uses a CNAME to the "technical subdomain" that was included with your 1&1 hosting package. The technical subdomain should look similar to s111111111.onlinehome.us (if you do not have a technical subdomain in your package, simply use one of the other domains in that package instead).

So using this guide as an example, we would update the DNS settings for 1and1help.com at its DNS host so that the CNAME s111111111.onlinehome.us is used for 1and1help.com
