What is spam filtering?

Like junk mail in your mailbox, spam is unwanted or unsolicited e-mail.
Spam filters catch spam before it reaches your Inbox. You can define
the level of spam filtering in your 1&1 Control Panel. Choose from
four levels of spam protection: off, low, middle, or high.

When you receive an e-mail, according to the level of filtering you choose,
it is categorized as spam. The Spam Filter checks the e-mail header for
things like forged outlook clients, inconsistent dates, the $ sign in
the subject line, etc. Depending on the content, values are assigned
to each of these indicators. For example: The $ sign is a strong indicator
for spam, giving it a value of 1 point. The more spam issues the mail
shows, the more points it gets. The e-mail is then marked by adding
"SPAM" to the subject line. You can then define filter rules in your
local e-mail client to sort the e-mails into corresponding folders right away.
