How do I set up Protected Directories in Linux Packages?



To set up password protection please follow these instructions:

1. Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel at: https://admin.1and1.com

If you have only one package, you will land on the Administration page.
If you have more than one package, select the relevant package to reach
its Administration page.


2. Select Protected Directories from the Web Space & Access section.

3. Click New User.

4. Create a user name and password. In this example we are choosing an existing
directory. Click Add after selecting a directory.

5. You can see the directory. You can also add multiple directories for the same
user name and password. Click OK.

6. A confirmation is displayed.

A file named .htaccess is placed in the directory being protected.
If this file is removed, the directory is no longer password protected.
