What is a Root Server?A Root Server is a computer with the following features: 1. You are its only user. You don't have to share it with any other customers. 2. You can log on to the server as "root" (administrator), giving you all the access rights to the computer. 3. The server can only be accessed and administered by a network connection. It is not possible to work directly from a PC using a keyboard and monitor. Root Servers are housed in our Data Center and pre-installed with the Fedora Core 4 Linux operating system. The rest is up to you. 1&1 does not undertake any administrative tasks on the server, only physical maintenance and repair. You are responsible for any administrative tasks such as security, backup and configuration. Root servers provide full flexibility of services and applications - the ability to be your own web host, run a game server or perform other root-level functions. You can adapt the pre-installed Linux system to your own needs. Plesk 8 control panel software is also pre-installed on 1&1 Root Servers. For customers who want their own server in our Data Center for reasons of storage capacity, CPU time or process limits, 1&1 also offers a Managed Server. Find out more...
